The Week That Was 2/6/23

The Week That Was 2/6/23 was the week MLIS partnered with Global Scarves and the week that Rapid City FC and the Cleveland Crunch wreaked havoc on the scoreboard. Cleveland scored 28 goals, one more than Rapid City, but it took them two games to do it, while the Grand Rapids team set a new MLIS record in a 27-4 win over the Detroit Waza Flo.

Wichita 12 Austin 5 F

The Austin Emerald has still given up double digit goals in every game this season, and their latest 12-5 loss to the Wichita Selection puts them at 0-6. Andric McGill had a hat trick for Wichita, and Tico Rodriguez and Tommy Fiszel each added two goals.

Grand Rapids 27 Detroit 4 F

MLIS is a new league, but when the Springfield Demize beat Austin 24-1 in just the second week of its inaugural season it seemed like the kind of record that would be almost impossible to break, but barely two months later the Detroit Waza Flo has relieved Austin of their dubious record for most goals allowed.

Alexis Mendez, Elmedin Zukic, and Nermin Crnkic each tied the MLIS record for goals in a game with five apiece. Ten different players scored for Grand Rapids (4-2) including goalkeeper Miguel Cervantes who became the first MLIS goalkeeper to score by throwing the ball into the goal. Grand Rapids scored 10 goals in the second quarter and 15 in the first half. The record 25th goal was scored with 6:20 remaining in the game.

Cleveland 14 Cincinnati 7 F

Tom Beck scored four goals and two assists as the Cleveland Crunch avenged their only loss by beating the CIncinnati Swerve 14-7. Beck now has eight goals in two games against the Swerve (2-4) this season. Admir Suljevic had five more points to take the MLIS lead in scoring. Fin Sallows had five goals for Cincinnati, including four in the fourth quarter.

Sunday, February 12

Wichita 9 Houston 5 F

The Wichita Selection never trailed but they found themselves in a 3-3 tie with the Houston Bolt at halftime. The third quarter, however, was all Wichita, with the Selection (4-1) scoring the next four goals and maintaining at least a three goal lead the rest of the game, resulting in a 9-5 win over Houston (4-3).

Andric McGill added two more goals to his weekend tally and Jose Marin also scored twice.

Cleveland 14 Detroit 3 F

In an inadvertent tribute to Super Bowl Weekend, the Detroit Waza Flo (1-6) hosted the Cleveland Crunch during the big game, but allowed more points than the Philadelphia Eagles. Sunday's 14-3 loss raised Detroit's total goals surrendered over the weekend's games to 41.

Ma'Cain Spragling had two goals and two assists, Admir Suljevic added another four points and Tom Beck had his third hat trick of the season to help the Crunch improve to 6-1.
